Air Force Excellence-In-Competition (EIC) Badges

3/24/2014

PictureEIC/Distinguished Badges
The US Air Force EIC Badges are awarded to any Airman who takes the time to practice and train with either the service pistol or service rifle.  The badges awarded include:

The Air Force Distinguished Rifleman Badge
The Air Force Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge
The Air Force Silver EIC Rifle Badge with Wreath
The Air Force Silver EIC Pistol Badge with Wreath
The Air Force Bronze EIC Rifle Badge with Wreath
The Air Force Bronze EIC Pistol Badge with Wreath
The Air Force Bronze EIC Rifle Badge
The Air Force Bronze EIC Pistol Badge
The Distinguished International Shooter Badge

All of these badges can be seen in the image to the left. Aside from the Distinguished International Shooter Badge, all of these badges are reasonably attainable.

I have also attached the Air Force regulations on earning and wearing the EIC and Distinguished Shooter Badges. It can be hard to find that particular instruction (AFI 34-143).

One interesting fact is that the EIC badges can be worn on both the Airman Battle Uniform (ABU) and the Service Dress (Blues). The wear of EIC badges on  the ABU did not go into effect until 17 January 2014. Although there is currently no cloth EIC badge to be worn on the ABU, it will likely be in stores by Summer 2014.

AFI 36-2903
5.1.2.2.2. Duty Shields, Missile, and Excellence-in-Competition Badge. If authorized, the Security Forces, Fire Protection and Office of Special Investigations duty shields, missile and/or excellence-in-competition badge will be worn on the wearer’s left pocket of the ABU. The duty shield or badge will be centered between the bottom of the pocket flap, bottom of the pocket and left and right edges.

I will expand on the criteria for achieving each of these awards in my next post. What questions do you have about EIC/Distinguished badges?

My name is Travis Jordan and I'm an Air Force 2Lt. I live and shoot in Southern California and frequently get harassed by marine shooters at Camp Pendleton. I've got bullet proof skin, so don't be afraid to disagree or debate. I encourage you to comment on any of my blog posts.
