I was discussing the CMP 1911 competitions with a former President's Hundred recipient. He was surprised when I told him that I've been practicing with .45 ACP. His concern was with fundamentals and cost. His logic was that is would be easier for me to train and focus on the fundamentals of shooting if I start out with .22 LR.
He said that instead of buying a new gun, purchase an .22 upper for your current 1911. This would allow me to practice on the gun I will compete with, but remove the recoil and cost of expensive ammo.
If you have been tracking the price of .22 ammo, it is not ideal, but better than shooting 45. Last time I bought 550 rounds of .22 LR for $20. It is still up to $80 and discouraging, but it will not remain this high forever.
The only brand to consider for this type of product is Marvel Precision. Apparently, this is a popular brand for this nich market. Check out their website for yourself. I'm hoping to pick up one of these uppers next year. I don't currently have the funds for this project, but it is on my list. This conversion costs $484 + $22 shipping.
